In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

The earth was empty and shapeless, darkness covered the deep, and the spirit of God hovered over the waters.

God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

God called the light Day, and the darkness Night. Evening came and morning came: day one.

God said, “Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters, to separate water from water.”

God made the expanse and separated the waters under it from the waters above it. And it was so.

God called the expanse Heavens. Evening came and morning came: a second day.

God said, “Let the waters under the heavens gather in one place, and let dry land appear.” And it was so.

God called the dry land Earth, and the gathered waters Seas. God saw that it was good.

God said, “Let the earth grow plants: seed-bearing plants, and fruit trees with seed in the fruit.” And it was so.

The earth brought up plants, each kind with its own seed. God saw that it was good.

Evening came and morning came: a third day.

God said, “Let lights in the expanse of the heavens separate day from night, and mark signs, appointed times, days, and years.”

“Let them be lights in the sky to shine on the earth.” And it was so.

God made the two great lights — the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night — and the stars.

God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth,

to rule the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. God saw that it was good.

Evening came and morning came: a fourth day.

God said, “Let the waters swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the sky.”

God created the great sea creatures, every living thing the waters swarmed with, and every winged bird, each according to its kind. God saw that it was good.

God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.”

Evening came and morning came: a fifth day.

God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures: livestock, creeping things, and wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.

God made the wild animals, the livestock, and every creeping thing of the ground, each according to its kind. God saw that it was good.

God said, “Let us make a human in our image, like us, and let them rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, and every creeping thing on the earth.”

God created the human in his image; in the image of God he created them, male and female.

God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it, and rule the fish, the birds, and every living thing that moves on the earth.”

God said, “See, I have given you every seed-bearing plant and every fruit tree for food.”

“And to every living thing of the earth, every bird, and everything that creeps, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. Evening came and morning came: the sixth day.
